MAPPING THE KONKAN LITTORAL: A SURVEY OF INDIA PROVINCIAL MAP WITH ARABIAN SEA INSET
Large lithographed folding map in colour, dissected and mounted on linen (as issued), with original folds. Approximate size: 90 × 110 cm unfolded.
The map depicts the western coastal strip of India (Konkan/Bombay Presidency), extending inland to the Deccan plateau, with a striking blue inset chart of the Arabian Sea approaches. Relief is shown with hachures and contour shading; political and district boundaries are highlighted in red; hydrography and waterways are printed in blue. The map includes detailed annotations of roads, railways, rivers, villages, ports, and district headquarters, offering a comprehensive snapshot of the region’s geography in the mid-twentieth century.
Issued by the Survey of India, this map belongs to the tradition of large-scale provincial and presidency surveys produced in the mid-twentieth century, crucial for both administrative governance and defence planning. By this period, Bombay Presidency was undergoing major transformation, with expanding rail and road networks linking the coastal towns of the Konkan to Bombay city and the interior Deccan.
The inclusion of the maritime inset underscores the enduring importance of the Konkan seaboard, both for navigation and for its role in Bombay’s growth as the premier port of western India. Today, such maps stand as records of pre-Independence and early post-Independence India, balancing utility with visual appeal.
