A vibrant 1964 Air India pictorial route map—an iconic mid-century design celebrating the airline’s global jet-age network, and one of the most recognisable examples of Indian commercial cartographic art

This exuberant mid-century route map represents Air India at the height of its creative and commercial confidence. By 1964, the airline had fully entered the jet era, operating Boeing 707s that connected India to Europe, North America, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. The map titled “On the Routes of My Jet Carpet” reflects the spirit of technological optimism that defined the period, blending geographic accuracy with the playful visual identity that made Air India one of the world’s most recognisable airline brands.

The map is not merely functional; it is a work of design history. Air India’s in-house art department, along with external designers such as Umesh Rao and the J. Walter Thompson agency, created a distinctive visual language that combined Indian folk motifs, modernist typography, and humorous caricatures—especially the famous Maharajah mascot, who appears in various incarnations across many maps and posters of the era. Although not all versions include the Maharajah, the stylistic influence remains unmistakable.

The sheet charts the airline’s expanding global footprint, showing routes radiating from Bombay, Delhi and Calcutta towards London, Paris, Rome, Nairobi, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Sydney and New York. It captures India’s emergence into international airspace not merely as a destination but as a cosmopolitan hub, reflecting the nation’s growing diplomatic, cultural, and economic presence in the post-Independence world.

Pictorial maps of this kind are now highly sought after because they embody the optimism of early modern travel, the glamour of the jet age, and the unique artistic language cultivated by Air India. As the final lot in the theme “Modern India: Roads, Travel & Aviation”, the map marks a chronological and thematic culmination: after centuries of territorial, political and military cartography, India’s engagement with the map becomes one of mobility, aspiration, and global imagination.
