Bombay Presidency and the Western Deccan – Transport and Tourism in Post-Independence India

This official thematic plate from the National Atlas of India, Dehradun, produced under the direction of Shiba Prasad Chatterjee (1903–1989), presents a comprehensive visual survey of transport and tourism infrastructure across the Bombay Presidency and the Western Deccan during the formative decades following Indian independence. The map charts an extensive network of railways, roads, ports, air routes, rivers, and urban centres, articulated within a clearly hierarchical planning framework.

Bombay is shown as the principal maritime and commercial hub, with transport corridors radiating inland toward the Deccan plateau. Hill stations, pilgrimage centres, and sites of touristic interest are systematically identified, reflecting the early incorporation of tourism into national economic planning. Insets of Greater Bombay and Matheran provide detailed urban and recreational topography.

Combining scientific survey traditions with modern thematic cartography, the map exemplifies India’s transition from colonial mapping practices to a national visual language of connectivity, development, and mobility.
