A substantial 1962 Survey of India wall map of India and neighbouring countries – issued in the immediate post-Independence period and contemporaneous with the Sino-Indian War

This imposing sheet reflects the evolving geopolitical landscape of South Asia fifteen years after Independence. The 1962 date is of particular interest: produced in the same year as the Sino-Indian conflict, the map captures national boundaries at one of the most sensitive moments in India’s modern territorial history. Ladakh, NEFA (now Arunachal Pradesh), the North-East Frontier and the Himalayan border belt appear prominently, contextualised within wider South Asian geography including Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Ceylon and Burma.

Survey of India wall maps from the early Republic period were designed for institutional and governmental use, employing bold colour coding, clear provincial outlines and updated road, rail and river networks. They bridge the transition from colonial administrative mapping to an independent national cartographic identity. Large-format examples survive less frequently due to their fragile nature, making this a compelling historical object.
