BOMBAY AS IMPERIAL GATEWAY: THE KING AND QUEEN IN INDIA, 1911–12

This monumental illustrated volume commemorates the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India in 1911–12, the only reigning British monarchs ever to visit the subcontinent. Compiled by Stanley Reed, special correspondent of the Times of India, and published by the Times of India office in Bombay, the book was intended as a lavish photographic record of the imperial tour, coinciding with the historic Delhi Durbar where George V was proclaimed Emperor of India.

The volume vividly documents Bombay as the ceremonial gateway to the royal progress: the King and Queen’s landing at Apollo Bunder, the grand civic reception at Bombay, and the King’s reply to the civic address are captured in dramatic photographs. Alongside these are portraits of Indian princes and dignitaries, including the Raj Saheb of Dhrangadhra, and large-scale images of durbar processions, military reviews, and state pageantry.

As both a product of Bombay’s foremost press and an imperial artefact of high Edwardian spectacle, The King and Queen in India stands as one of the most visually arresting works of early 20th-century Indian photo-publishing. Deluxe gilt morocco copies such as the present example remain highly desirable to collectors of Bombay and Raj history.
