A WOMAN’S GAZE ON ISLAM AND ZOROASTRIAN INDIA: MRS. YOUNG’S THE MOSLEM NOBLE (1857)
Published in London in 1857, The Moslem Noble by Mrs Young offers a rare female-authored account of Islamic society and Parsee (Zoroastrian) culture in Western India. Illustrated from the author’s own drawings, the work blends ethnographic observation with visual record, placing it within the broader tradition of Victorian Orientalist literature.
Distinct from the writings of her near-contemporary Mrs Marianne Postans, whose Cutch; or Random Sketches, taken during a residence in one of the Northern Provinces of Western India; interspersed with LEGENDS AND TRADITIONS (1839) remains a key illustrated travelogue of Western India, Mrs Young’s contribution lies in her attention to religious identity and social structure, particularly her depictions of the “Moslem noble” and the influential Parsee community of Bombay. The book thus occupies an important position in the mid-19th-century corpus of women’s travel and ethnographic writings on India.
